What is Tunnel Diode and how it works

A tunnel diode is fabricated from Germanium or Gallium arsenide. Unlike the conventional diode, its p and n regions are heavily doped. The heavy doping of p and n regions create a narrow depletion region. which allows the electrons to tunnel through the diode even at a very low forward voltage condition. The narrow depletion region also allows the conduction for reverse voltages and there is no breakdown effect in a tunnel diode.

The current starts flowing with the application of small current. With the increase in the¬†forward voltage, it increases until ‘a’. However, after this point the current flow reduces. This characteristic of tunnel diode is referred as negative resistance and this region of the curve is known as negative resistance region.
